While it is better than the alternative, testing blood sugar levels and taking the proper medications is not much fun. Fortunately, living a lifestyle that helps to control diabetes can be a lot of fun. Eating properly can be challenging and enjoyable as you learn about new healthy foods and ways to prepare them. Exercising, as hard as it is to start, is pleasurable as well; at least once you get into it on a regular basis.

Change Your Way of Eating

Eating properly is the first thing you should do, even if you do not have diabetes. By getting an early start on a healthy diet, you may never have to worry about diabetes. As tempting as fast food and prepared foods are, they are killers; at least if you eat them regularly.

A bill of fare that includes real, whole foods will help you control diabetes. Whole foods keep your blood sugar levels in check. Not only are they good for diabetes prevention and control, they will help you feel better and healthier overall. They help you avoid many diseases such as cancer and high blood pressure.

To eat a wholesome diet, eat as most animals do. They eat plant foods and lean meats. Plant foods you should eat include fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and whole grains. Lean meats include most any meat and poultry as long as you cut the fat and the skin off before preparing. Nutritionists also recommend eating heart-healthy fish such salmon.

Start Getting Some Exercise

For controlling diabetes, getting active is just as important as eating a healthy diet. You do not have to participate in a triathlon to be in good physical shape. You do need to get some brisk exercise at least four or five days per week. This includes bicycling, running, swimming and walking. Start slow, increase your speed over time, and work your way up to at least 30 minutes per day. Include some weight training, too, if you can.

Whether you are trying to prevent or control diabetes, the proper lifestyle is the way to go. It is good for the body, and the mind will appreciate it, too. Lifestyle changes can add healthful years to your life.
